Present Simple

Example: + We play basketball every Monday.

                - We don't play basketball every Monday.

                ? Do you play basketball every Monday? Yes, we do. / No, we don't.

3rd person singular (suffix -s/-es): plays, doesn't, does

Use: to describe activities and events that happen regularly, to describe something that is always true, to describe schedules and timetables

Phrases used with Present Simple: every day/month/week..., on Mondays/Saturdays, adverbs of frequency (always, often, usually, sometimes, hardly ever, never), etc.

Present Continuous

Example: + Susan is watching TV at the moment.

                - Susan isn't watching TV at the moment.

                ? Is Susan watching TV at the moment? Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.

Use: to describe activities happening at the moment of speaking or around now, to describe future arrangements

Phrases used with Present Continuous: now, at the moment, today, this week, this month, etc.

Past Simple

Example: + I washed my hair yesterday.

               - I didn't wash my hair yesterday.

               ? Did I wash my hair yesterday?  Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.

Use: to describe activities and events that started and finished in the past, usually with a time expression

Phrases used with Past Simple: yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week/month/year, in 2018, etc.

Past Continuous

Example: + She was doing her homework yesterday at 5 o'clock.

                - She wasn't doing her homework yesterday at 5 o'clock.

                ? Was she doing her homework? Yes, she was. / No, she wasn't.

Use: to decribe activities or events that lasted longer in the past

Past Simple vs. Past Continuous

Check the use of these two tenses watching the video:  


Past Simple for actions that happenned one after another: 

He opened the door, took off his coat and turned on the lights.

Past Continuous for actions happenning at the same time in the past:

The sun was shining, the wind was mildly blowing and the clouds were slowly moving in the sky.

Past Simple and Past Continuous for a single event (Simple) that interrupted a longer event (Continuous) in the past.

While I was watching TV, my parents came home.

Present Perfect Simple

Example: + I have done my homework.

                - I haven't done my homework.

                ? Have you done your homework?

3rd person singular: has/hasn't

Use: to describe actions or events that started in the past and still continue (usually with for/since); to describe actions or events that happenned in the past without mentioning when it happenned (we can see the result, or have the experience)

Past Perfect


Example: + I had done my homework before I went to bed.

                - I hadn't done my homework before I went to bed.

                ? Had you done your homework before you went to bed?

Use: to describe an event that happenned before another event in the past

Reported Speech

When transforming direct speech into reported, we need to change the tenses:

  • present simple = past simple
  • present continuous = past continuous
  • past simple = past perfect
  • present perfect = past perfect
  • will = would
  • can = could

Quantifiers

some, any -used with countable plural nouns, uncountable nouns

some - in positive (+) sentences, in question (?) when one has the object or knowledge of possesion

any - in negative (-) sentences and questions (?)

 much, many, a lot of - large quantity of something

much - used with uncountable nouns, preffered in negative (-) sentences and questions (?), how much

many - used with plural countable nouns, preffered in negative (-) sentences and questions (?), how many

a lot of - used with both plural countable and uncountable nouns, preffered in positive (+) sentences, less formal than much and many

a few, a little - small quantity of something

a few - used with plural countable nouns

a little - used with uncountable nouns

First Conditional

Consisting of two clauses: main clause (will+verb in a base form)

                                               if clause (present simple)

If she does her homework, the teacher won't be angry. 

                                      or

The teacher won't be angry if she does her homework.


Use: real condition in the future (what the future will be like if the condition is fullfilled)

Second Conditional

Consisting of two clauses: main clause (would+verb in a base form)

                                                if clause (past simple)

If she did her homework, the teacher wouldn't be angry.    
                                           or
The teacher wouldn't be angry if she did her homework.

If I were you, I would tell him. (were is usually used instead of was in these clauses)

Use: unreal condition in the present (what the present would be like if the condition was fullfilled)
